Maltese Wild Flowering Plants on the net
Welcome, this homepage is dedicated to the wild flowering plants that are indigenous to the countryside of Malta. The photograph shown here is of one of the nice crocuses that can be encountered after the rain in the Maltese Countryside.
You will probably be asking yourselves why should anyone be setting up a homepage with such an unusual subject, or you might even be wondering how do I propose to manage such a site.
The answer is very simple...
In 1992 and 1993, two very wet years therefore very good for wild plant propagation, my father (Dennis), my mother (Marie-Therese), my sister (Kirsty) and myself conducted a field research project on the wild flowering plants of Malta as a passtime. We scoured the countryside, climbed all the Maltese hills, crossed knee-deep swampy marshland, crossed winter streams in tennis shoes, and through all this and much more, we carried our faithful photographic camera and several plant guide books to try to faithfully record in print, photographically and scientifically these wonders of nature that are normally ignored and trampled upon by most. In our outings we made sure to find each species in full bloom, so for certain rare plants this meant several consecutive visits. There are over 600 different species of flowering plants in these small Islands and I hope that when this page is complete it will serve as a source of interest to all you Web Surfers, so that if you ever come on holiday to Malta or for that matter if you live here already, you will have more to do than just visit museums and Paceville!!
Finally, can you please not pick any of the flowers. You can admire them, photograph them, draw them or even smell them, but please DO NOT PICK THEM !!!!!
